The spotted drum is widespread throughout the tropical waters of the occidental Atlantic Ocean from south Florida to Brazil including by the way the Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, and owes its name to its caudal and dorsal fins, which when the fish is juvenile have an elongated and slender shape, resembling the drumsticks.
It is frequently observed during the day under ledges or near the opening of small caves, at depths between 3 and 30 metres (98 ft), where it swims in repetitive patterns.
A nocturnal feeder, it leaves the protection of its daily shelter at night to feed mainly on small crustaceans and Polychaete worms. When it is juvenile, its dorsal fin is long and thin, simulating a ribbon like that of rhythmic gymnasts.
Its caudal fin merges with its body showing itself as a single unit. When adult, the dorsal fin remains practically the same size. However, its graceful caudal fin loses its slenderness giving way to a thick body.
In Cozumel we can enjoy watching this elegant and fast swimmer.
