C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl Shipwreck/Naufragio C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl, Cozumel, México

The shipwreck C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl, is the largest and best preserved shipwreck of the island of Cozumel and of the entire Mayan Riviera. Located on the sandbanks in front of the Chankanaab Park, the C-53, with its 58 meters in length, 10 meters in length, 12 in depth and 1000 tons of displacement, stands motionless and vertical resting on its keel and its bow pointing serene towards the north.

Since 1944, the C-53 served in the United States Navy as a mine sweeper. In the decade of the 60s, it was bought by the Mexican Navy to become a gunboat and be occupied in maritime rescue and in the fight against illegal shipments of arms and drugs allover the Mexican Gulf. After 55 years of maritime work, the C-53 was donated to the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park to be sunken and create an artificial reef with two objectives: to de-stress the reefs of the island (which receive thousands of visitors per year) and provide a new alternative to promote diving tourism in the region.

Thus, since 1999 and 25 meters deep, the C-53 offers divers the possibility of appreciating its large hull, bedrooms, corridors, engine room, warehouses, cockpit, bridge and decks because it was adapted for to be penetrated by divers according to their levels of certification and diving experience.

El naufragio C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl, es el naufragio más grande y mejor conservado de la isla de Cozumel y de toda la Riviera Maya. Ubicado en los arenales frente al parque Chankanaab, el C-53, con sus 58 metros de eslora, 10 de manga, 12 de puntal y 1000 toneladas de desplazamiento, se yergue descansando inmóvil y vertical sobre su quilla y su proa apuntando serena hacia el norte.

Desde 1944, el C-53 sirvió en la marina de Estados Unidos como barredor de minas. En la década de los 60s, fue comprado por la Armada Mexicana para convertirse en un buque cañonero y ser ocupado en rescate marítio y en la lucha contra los envíos ilegales armas y drogas por todo el Golfo de México.

Tras 55 años de labor marítima, el C-53 fue donado al Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel para ser hundido y asi crear un arrecife artificial con dos objetivos: desestresar los arrecifes de la isla (los cuales reciben miles de visitantes por año) y proveer una nueva alternativa para fomentar el turismo de buceo en toda la región. Así, desde 1999 y a 25 metros de profundidad, el C-53 ofrece los buzos la posibilidad de apreciar su gran casco, recámaras, pasillos, sala de máquinas, bodegas, cabina de mando, puente y cubiertas pues está adaptado para que los buzos lo penetren según sus niveles de certificación y experiencia.
